Area Info

Playa de las Américas is the largest resort town in the South of Tenerife, offering a myriad of activities for all ages.  Over the years development and building have merged Las Américas with the older town of Los Cristianos, and together the two form a substantial holiday city.  The municipal boundary bisects the area, so that one part is administered by the town hall in Adeje, and the other by Arona.

Hotels abound, and recent policy has been to upgrade the quality of accommodation, so there are more 4 and 5 star hotels in this area than anywhere else in the Canary Islands.  The gentrification of Playa de las Américas can be most clearly seen in the Fañabé district, where the best hotels look out over manicured beaches.

Due to its size, Playa de las Américas has an enormous range of properties on offer.  The resort follows the coastline, and extends up some of the surrounding hills, so many properties offer wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean and the small island of La Gomera, a few kilometres off the coast.  Older properties tend to be less spacious and offer fewer luxury touches, while newer districts have been constructed to appeal to the upper echelons of the market.

Las Américas is made up largely of hotels jostling with apartments.  These are some of the older complexes, but their central location still makes them very viable rental investments.  The area extends up to a headland, lined with beaches, and the shopping areas around the Mare Nostrum Hotel.  Recently re-developed, this has become one of the jewels in the crown of Playa de las Américas.  Set back from the sea is Américas Golf, which has a range of newer luxury properties looking over the green fairways.

Eating Out

There are literally hundreds of restaurants and bars appealing to all tastes, from teppanyaki and sushi, to fish and chips and traditional tapas.

Las Américas has also been called a shoppers paradise, because of the low retail tax rate in Tenerife, and you’ll find everything from designer clothes to the latest electronic gizmos on offer.

Sports

Golf

In the centre of Playa de Las Américas, Golf Las Américas stands in a unique location, forming a natural amphitheatre facing the ocean, with glorious views of the island of La Gomera.  The 18 holes form an oasis of lush tropical fairways and greens interspersed with lakes, bunkers and palm trees.  A challenging course, designer John Jacobs, gave priority to a myriad of obstacles on this par 72 course, which covers a total of 6,039 metres. An excellent Club House which caters for all Golfers’ needs.  Constructed around and within the Golf Course are several select developments. These provide accommodation ranging in size from one bedroom apartments to luxury villas.

Other golf courses at Golf del Sur, Adeje and Amarilla are all less than 20 minutes away. For any beginners or those seeking to improve their short game, a good quality par 3 course at Los Palos is only a short drive.

Watersports

Europe’s largest water park, Siam Park, has recently been constructed and is a unique experience.  There is also an existing (and very popular) water park.

Perhaps the most popular attraction is the ocean itself, and las Américas boasts miles of sandy beaches, with all manner of water sports on offer, as well as excursions to visit the resident whale population.

Gymnasiums

There are numerous gymnasiums & sports facilities on the doorstep, including in most hotels, which you can use on a pay as you go basis.

Other

There is no excuse not to keep up your fitness levels, as you can find tennis courts, padel tennis, swimming pools, and of course beautiful walks around the area.

Location

There is a bus station in Playa de las Américas with regular services to all parts of the island, including the airports.

Taxis abound and are probably the best (and fairly cheap) way of getting around.
