Over the years the various of Cultures and Religions in Tenerife have made their mark, and led to a mixture of new traditions.

Stylish Christmas Trees, lights and decorations can be found across the island, and give a wonderfully festive feel to the areas.

As well as the more modern traditions, Tenerife holds true to some of the more traditional followings.

The Nativity

Tenerife has many deeply routed traditions, and non so much as The Nativity.

You will find a mixture of traditional Christmas Decor wherever you go, and Christmas Trees galore, but one of  Tenerife’s most deeply routed tradition is  The Nativity. As well as in peoples houses, you will find Nativity displays in bars, restaurants, shops, parks, even in the centre of roundabouts. And most towns will have stunning exhibitions representing the local tradition and culture.

The 3 Kings

Every year on 5th January the 3 Kings of the Orient; Melchior, Gaspar & Balthasar,  parade around the cities on camels …. or floats.

In some areas, Adeje for example, they even arrive by helicopter, greeted by hundreds of adoring children waiting to receive gifts, sweets and blessings for the forthcoming year!

Christmas Arts & Crafts Fair

The annual Christmas Arts & Crafts Fair is organised by the Canarian Authorities, and alternates between the islands. 2019 will be hosted by Tenerife from 4th December to 8th December, in the Recinto Ferial, Santa Cruz.

With a vast range of traditional products on offer, 150 stalls offer food and drink, hand crafted leather, pottery, woodwork, as well as jewellery, lacework, and much more. A great day out to hunt for Christmas gifts.

ViewingVisit_Blog_HEADER

When you’re looking for your dream home in the sun, it can be really easy to get swept up by gorgeous looking properties bathed in sunshine on websites outside of your budget. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the exciting decisions you need to make when buying a property overseas you may want it to be close to the beach, or have a sea view, and then you need to decide whether you prefer an apartment on a complex or a villa? It is important to make a list of your search criteria!

With the property likely to be some distance away and viewing visits taking up precious holiday time it is important to prepare as much in advance as possible. The most important thing to consider when buying a property is what exactly your budget is – the last thing you want is to fall in love with a property you can’t afford!

Here are some Top Tips for planning your Visit & Budget
when it comes to purchasing property in Tenerife…

1) Get Organised

Before you even begin to plan your visit, you need to spend some time getting your finances organised. Set aside some time to do this as you may miss something out if you rush.

If you are a cash buyer, ensure the funds are in place or can be easily accessed. If these are coming from investments or pension release type products be sure to know the exact length of time it takes to release these funds. Completion on a property once you have found ‘the one’ normally takes 6-8 weeks and we help you every step of the way. You need to make sure your finance is organised, in order to put you in a strong buying position.

Will you need a Spanish mortgage? If so, we have a mortgage pre-qualification form and can help point you in the right direction. Contact us for details and we will advise you. Knowing your options and defining your budget will put you in a stronger position when making an offer to a vendor. Are you considering re-mortgaging a property or taking out a loan? Get advice from your bank manager or finance advisor and if possible get a firm offer of loan in writing before your visit. You need to know what your loan/mortgage possibilities are. It is not enough that someone on the front counter tells you no problem we will loan you money.

2) Contact Us

Give us as much notice as possible of your intended trip. This will give us time (with the information you provide) to research some suitable properties that tick all your boxes. Through discussions by phone or email we will prepare a shortlist of the correct and affordable properties for you to view. This will save you a lot of time looking at the wrong properties some agents will show you many properties that are not in your price range. We prefer to tailor make a list of suitable properties for you to view that are within your budget and price range.

3) Viewing & Decision Time

Allow yourselves at least a couple of mornings for viewings, as you may want to go back and look at something a second time to be sure.

Hopefully we have been successful in finding you a property and after speaking with all parties and agreeing the purchase, a contract will be drawn up with your details and the vendors for all to sign. Upon the signing of this you will be required to pay a 10% deposit to secure the property so that we can remove it from the market. This will be required as soon as possible, usually within 7 working days, so you must make sure this part of the funding is readily available.

4) Open Bank Account & Obtain NIE

This is all part of the service we provide and will take a few hours in a morning. To open a bank account we will need documents sending prior to your visit, usually a driving license or utility bill as proof of address and copy of your P60, tax return or letter from the DWP showing your NI number if you are receiving a pension.

5) Relax & Enjoy Your Holiday!

If you have followed the steps correctly you can now spend some time enjoying the island, safe in the knowledge that when you next visit, it will be to collect your keys and walk through the front door of your own property in the sun (and not to be returning to begin your search again only to find the property you fell in love with had been sold in the time you had returned home to organise your finances!).

10-things-to-look-for-in-a-home-to-retire-in-Tenerife

10 things to look for in a home to retire in Tenerife

10 things to look for in a home to retire in Tenerife covers the most important factors you should look for when choosing a property for retirement on the island.

One of the most popular reasons to buy a home in Tenerife is for semi/full retirement. It makes a lot of sense to choose the island as a retirement destination. The sun shines all year, there is a great social life , the crime rate is negligible , cost of living is lower than the UK and there are so many fantastic restaurants that are reasonably priced so your pension stretches further.

Social life

Social life is one of the most important factors to think about when choosing a home to retire in Tenerife. There have been many studies showing that the mind remains more active, responsive and keeps younger if you have an active social life. Socialising is a natural protection against age related degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and not to be underestimated. Choose an area where there are other people in your age group that live and integrate into the community. The great thing about Tenerife is you don’t need to sit indoors in front of a TV , you can be outside living enjoying the weather and meeting new friends.

Healthcare

Healthcare is going to be an increasingly important issue as the years go on. Though you might be as fit as a fiddle today, you need to think into the future. The Spanish public health system is very good and there is also a private health sector which you should look into. Make sure that there is a health centre close to where you choose your home to retire in Tenerife.

Grandchildren

Your Grandchildren are going to love staying with you in your Tenerife home! Many people worry that they won’t see enough of their grandchildren when they make the move, and then discover the opposite. Flights are reasonably priced to Tenerife when booking in advance which is easier to do when you have your home to retire in Tenerife. You will find that you are spending much more quality time with them creating memories and exploring all that this special island has to offer. There are a number of different areas , just outside the main tourist resorts , where you will find suitable properties for the whole family to enjoy.

Local Shops

Local shops are of course important, but also are the products they stock. You will find fresh fruit and veg markets held at the weekends as well as fish markets sold in coastal fishing village’s .No doubt there may be things that you miss from the UK, but luckily there are lots of supermarkets that stock imported product’s so you need never have a craving that can’t be satisfied! There are a number of British supermarket’s close by so you can always pop in and stock up on your Marmite (which is rich in vitamin B, and should be a staple in your diet!).

Maintenance

Low maintenance is a key factor in choosing a home to retire in Tenerife. Fortunately most complexes are well maintained, but not all of them, so make sure you choose wisely! Take advice from your estate agent who will know the ins and outs of all the local developments. If your new home is to be in a complex make sure the one you choose is in good condition, you don’t want to be spending your time fretting about things that need repairing.

Facilities

Choose a complex with good facilities, at least a well-maintained pool. A nice pool area is no doubt something that will entice the family to visit more often. It is great to see the grandkids improve their swimming skills as they grow. A good complex will make them feel like they are on holiday and you need to give them that feeling so they keep coming back! Involving yourself in exercise classes, social groups and activities is important as you age, so if these things are on your doorstep then you are going to get the best out of retirement and keep yourself in the best possible condition!

Pets

Pets are important to many people and retirees are no exception, in fact they are probably more important as you grow older. Looking after a pet is another factor that can keep your mind and body young and active. However, not all complexes welcome pets so if you plan to have one, or are bringing Fido over from the UK, make sure that the complex you are moving into allows them.

Mobility

Although you may be mobile now, in a few years stairs might be a barrier and mobility access may be important. Think about this now and choose a home to retire in Tenerife that has lifts and good access. It may be a precaution you won’t need, but it’s good to be on the safe side!

Transport

You may well have a car, but it’s also a good idea to consider public transport, and in Tenerife that means buses (guaguas) and taxis. Both are relatively cheap and efficient in Tenerife but you should ensure you are near a bus route. Many outlying areas are not, or buses are quite infrequent which can be inconvenient.

Price

The PRICE…! This is of course a factor to consider when purchasing a home to retire in Tenerife. We don’t all have a bottomless pit so this involves some careful calculation as you will want to tick as many of the boxes as possible while still retaining a nest egg in case of emergency. If your pension does not cover your monthly needs, then the amount you set aside may need to bolster your income. Fortunately, the cost of living is low in Tenerife, and many of the things that lead to a good quality of life are cheap… or free!

5 ways to keep fit in your sixties in Tenerife

We look as 5 ways to keep fit in your sixties in Tenerife because physical fitness is vital when you retire. Exercise in retirement is not only the best way to make sure your body weathers the rigours of aging, but a huge body of research shows that physical exercise is the best way to keep your mind alert too.

Scientists and doctors alike recommend exercise and the best type for you, they say, is outdoors. Coming from the UK, you may not be used to having the luxury venturing into the great outdoors because the weather keeps you in or because living in crowded cities makes it simply unpleasant. Get ready to change that if you choose to retire in Tenerife! Here the outdoors is there to enjoy 12 months a year, and your mind and body will thank you for it!

Take a walk

Tenerife is a fascinating island with enormous diversity which is a great way to keep fit in your sixties in Tenerife. From the forests of Anaga to to the open Caldera of Teide there is so much to explore. The island is criss crossed with paths and treks to follow that vary in difficulty and are clearly marked. There are many walking groups who will welcome you, and these are a great way to make new friends. There are also apps such as Wikiloc that will allow you to follow trails using the GPS of your phone. Walks vary from easy to challenging and this has to be our top recommendation. Recent research also shows that being in nature is also good to prevent or mitigate the effects of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

A dip in the ocean

Just as good as a walk is a dip in the ocean. Don’t just perch on a bar stool watching the waves lap up on the shore… jump in! Better still, put on a snorkel and investigate the amazing undersea life. Swimming is great aerobic exercise for people of any age and there is no shortage of beaches on the island, we are surrounded by them. There are also pools to enjoy the sea in such as Lagos Martianez, a wonderful way to keep fit in your sixties in Tenerife!

Dance

Dance is a brilliant way to exercise! Not only will you meet new people and enjoy a great atmosphere, but you will learn a new skill which is exactly the sort of challenge that you need in retirement. There are many bars and schools teaching various styles of Spanish dancing which vary from formal lessons to fun evenings, or if you prefer you could join a line dancing group.
